The Austrian Netherlands is an area which is today modern Belgium which was a world center of trade for hundreds of years. Spain ceded the Spanish Netherlands to Austria in 1714 after the Spanish defeat in the War of Spanish Succession. It was annexed by French Revolutionary forces in 1795.
