Part of Germany before World War One, Danzig became an independent city allied to Poland under the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. Danzig was an automatous city-state between 1920 and 1939 when it issued its own coins. It was occupied by the Nazi Germans in 1939 and the Russians in 1945. Today it is part of Poland.
