Gold Coins of Vatican City

The various Popes have lived in the area now called Vatican City since Byzantine Emperor Constantine gave the area to Pope Miltiades in 313AD.  The first walls were added by Pope Leo IV in 847AD. The area became a walled fortress under Pope Paul III in 1537 the area became an independent state in 1929. The Church has issued coins since at least the 15th century.
