$4 Gold Stella 1879-1880
The US Four Dollar Stella is a pattern that was intended to be a trade coin with Europe, the Stella being the same weight and value as a British Sovereign, French 20 Franc, Belgium 20 Franc, Italian 20 Lire, Spanish 20 Pesetas and the Swiss 20 Franc. They were struck for two years in two styles, the Flowing Hair and the Coiled Hair. The Stella is extremely rare and when offered often sell for between one hundred thousand and a half million dollars.
